Salmon Plan Released
The state released a sweeping plan Wednesday to help save salmon from extinction -- the culmination of an 18-month study aimed at bringing state logging rules in compliance with Oregons salmon recovery efforts. Mary Scurlock of Eugene-based Pacific Rivers Council, also dedicated to the protection of river habitats and watersheds, was one of three committee members who declined to support the recommendations on riparian zones, saying they would neither save salmon nor meet federal standards. "The committee ought to have had representation from the federal natural resources agencies, and compliance with federal standards should have been an explicit goal of our work," she told the Oregon Forestry Board.
