Amphibians Advocates May Sue Anew: Tougher Protections Sought for 2 Sierra Frog, Toad Species

An environmental group that forced millions of acres in California to be designated "critical habitat" for the endangered red-legged frog is attempting a reprise with two small amphibians in the Sierra Nevada. "The frog is primarily threatened by predation from stocked trout in Sierra lakes," said Deanna Spooner, spokeswoman for Pacific Rivers Council. "For the toads, the main issue is livestock grazing. Yosemite toads breed in wet meadows, where cattle and sheep like to graze. Theyre trampled, and their habitat is destroyed."
