Praise governor's stand

By David Bayles
The Oregonian

Gov. Ted Kulongoski has spoken out strongly on behalf of the tens of thousands of people who oppose logging in the roadless areas of Southern Oregon's Biscuit burn. Roadless areas represent some of the last best places -- they support the healthiest populations of native trout and are a source of clean drinking water.

The greatest threat facing roadless watersheds is erosion dumping soil into the streams -- erosion from logging itself and erosion from the miles of logging roads, landings and skid trails that are built to support the logging. The results of such massive erosion include dirty water, smothered spawning beds, degraded habitat and further losses in salmon and steelhead populations.

The governor's leadership should be commended, and we support his actions.
