Pacific River Council's "Freshwater Ecosystems In Crisis: A Synopsis of Decline" is a "primer" on the environmental crisis facing our freshwater ecosystems. This brief but compelling scientific account of the state of our waters today is timely and important for media coverage as it reminds us why we must continue to protect our precious rivers, lakes, and streams - for fish, wildlife and humans alike.
Pacific River Council's newest publication is a "primer" on the environmental crisis facing our freshwater ecosystems. This brief but compelling scientific account of the state of our waters today is timely and important for media coverage as it reminds us why we must continue to protect our precious rivers, lakes, and streams - for fish, wildlife and humans alike.
The new report documents how rivers, streams, wetlands, and lakes have lost a greater proportion of their species and habitat than any other ecosystem on land or in the oceans. And of all the earth's major ecosystems, they have suffered the most calamitous declines. Causes of decline include multiple threats from freshwater and land-based sources. Relatively few aquatic ecosystems remain in a nearly natural condition, and these waters and their watersheds must be carefully safeguarded if conservation and restoration goals mandated by various state and federal laws are to be achieved.
