A Life Well LivedKeith Hansen

Keith Hansen

November 8, 1945 - August 13, 2009
"He was larger than life."

Keith was born in Oakland, California to Leonard and Mildred Hansen. He grew up in Hayward, CA and attended the University of California Berkeley where he graduated with a BS in Biology in 1967. He went on to medical school and graduated Alpha Omega Alpha from Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1971. Keith established his hematology/oncology practice at Metropolitan Clinic in Portland in 1978. His medical career transitioned through Healthfirst Medical Group, to Northwest Cancer Specialists where he was a full-time physician for 31 years. Keith established the Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Program at Legacy Health System and performed the first bone marrow transplant in Oregon in 1989.

"For most of the last decade, Keith Hansen, M.D. was a member of the Board of Directors of Pacific Rivers Council, where he was a determined and consistent voice for the importance of good science as the foundation for good conservation, and for the need to put ecosystem protection ahead of political advantage. His integrity fortified us, and while we deeply regret his passing, his clear strong voice will remain with us always." --David Bayles, PRC Board Member and former Executive Director

Keith was welcomed to the board of Pacific Rivers Council in April 2004 and served as board secretary. He and his wife, Lisa were extremely active in conservation efforts, and they joined in a joint effort. Through this and other organizations he worked to improve habitat and support policies that protect wild fish. He had a passion for steelheading, enthusiasm for good food and wine, and an outstanding dedication to his patients and family.

Keith became one with the Dean River on August 13, 2009 and Pacific Rivers will miss him dearly. Thanks to all who have made donations in his memory. His passion for our mission will carry on through the generosity of those who cared so deeply about him.
