Recovery Planning

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) requires the Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service to develop recovery plans for listed species to ensure the conservation of these species.  U.S.C. 16 § 1533(f).  PRC has developed a recovery planning and review template based upon an extensive review of conservation planning literature and assessments.  The intent of this template is for use as a tool that would be generally relevant across species, and is intended to address the overall questions of whether the plan is complete and scientifically credible.  Based upon the template, we have submitted comments on various plans.  Click below to read our recovery plan comments on:

Read a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report which finds that recovery plans play a critical role in listed species recovery efforts.

The State of Oregon completed a Conservation Plan for the Oregon Coast coho in 2007 while the coho was not listed under the federal ESA.  It is important to note that this was not a recovery plan under the federal ESA, and it will now need to be revised to meet the criteria for federal recovery plans.  Read our policy comments  and our science comments on the State's Oregon Coast Coho Recovery Plan.  Read more about our efforts to save the Oregon coast coho.
